How to be a travel blogger

Want to get paid to travel the world? There’s no better way to do it than starting your own travel blog! In today’s world of influencer culture, blogging has become a lucrative career choice. Figures like Johnny Ward, Matthew Kepmes and Heather Delany earn up to 2 million USD through their travel blogs! So if you decide to take up your own, or more accurately, your keyboard, here is a guide on becoming a travel blogger.

1. Find your passion and nicheHow to be a travel blogger

Most blogs on the internet don’t survive very long, and travel blogs are no different. Making a full-time career out of your blog is a strenuous process so make sure you pick a topic or topics you’re passionate about. Not only will passion play a motivating role, but your passion will also come across in the content you create, making it more engaging and exciting to your potential audience.

Finding a niche helps you find and target your audience better as well. Be it food, budget, luxury or bucket list. There are readers for every genre spread all across the internet.

2. Pick your name, style and platformHow to be a travel blogger

While Shakespeare did say, “What’s in a name?” in today’s world, quite a lot exists! A catchy, relevant name will help you appear on web searches and make it memorable to readers.

Next up is writing style. Are you a casual writer who likes to mix it up with friendly humour, or do you like keeping things formal? It’s Important to find what you’re comfortable with, make it attractive, and maintain it. There are a lot of great platforms out there to start writing on, both paid and unpaid. While WordPress is unanimously voted as being the best, remember to do your research and find one that meets all your specific requirements.

3. Define your goals and set limitsHow to be a travel blogger

While being optimistic is nice, you must have realistic expectations of your blog page. Make your goals specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-based. Check your engagement details every few months to be sure you are on track and review accordingly. In a blog, the only person you are in competition with is yourself and setting goals will ensure that you know how you’re progressing.

While passion is a good thing to have, it’s also essential to keep yourself in check to avoid burnout or writer’s block. Take note of all ideas for future references. Make filler blogs and save them for future use in your free time. Many free time management and scheduling apps are available to you, so make sure you utilize them well.

4. Stay relevant How to be a travel blogger

With the massive influx of information circling the internet daily, you need to keep up with it to remain relevant in the long run. You should also always cross-check your sources to ensure you aren’t spreading false information. Make sure you don’t involve too many personal views and avoid controversy. While taking inspiration from fellow writers is good, never copy another blog site.

You don’t need to be super rich and travel the world to become a successful blogger. You can start small, covering niche neighbouring locations and local travel. Today, many people are searching for undiscovered local gems as local tourism is gaining traction. You can also use your platform to draw attention to local small businesses. All in all, you should use your platform efficiently with a touch of personality and uniqueness to make your mark.

5. Use social media effectivelyHow to be a travel blogger

A great social media strategy can make or break your blog. With the millions of sites available today, it may seem impossible to choose which one to focus on. However, instead of mass marketing on everything you can get your hands on, treat every social media platform as a place to reach a different audience.

You can choose to focus on one or all of these social media platforms in this order of preference or whatever works best for you.

1. Instagram

2. Facebook

3. Pinterest

4. Twitter

5. Tumblr

You can also go as far as creating your youtube channel, but that will probably switch your priorities. However, if you are interested in becoming a Travel Youtuber, check out our guide on How To Become a Travel Youtuber.
