Archana Sardana
Archana Sardana was India’s first female BASE jumper. BASE jumping is a sport that involves jumping from fixed objects and landing on a designated spot, known as the BASE, with the help of a parachute. The activity is well known to be fear-inducing for many, but Archana wasn’t one to be held back and is now one of the only four licensed women skydivers in the country.
But she couldn’t stop at one historical achievement. She is now the very first female Master Scuba Diver Trainer in India and founder of Archana Sandana Scuba Diving Academy. And this adventure sports enthusiast doesn’t show any signs of halting her endeavours anytime soon, so keep an eye out for any future records!
Premlata Agarwal
The first Indian woman to scale the Seven Summits – Premlata Agarwal, was awarded the Padmashree for her achievement in 2013. The Seven Summits are the seven highest continental peaks globally – Mount Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, Kilimanjaro, Mount Elbrus, Mount Vinson and Puncak Jaya. Very few climbers have this title to their name worldwide. On 17th May 2011, she also became the oldest woman to scale the peak of Mount Everest. She’s a symbol of strength for Indian women and a sign to show that no mountain is too high to overcome – both metaphorically and literally.
Neela Bhaskar
While scuba diving is slowly gaining traction in India, cave diving is virtually unheard of. Despite this, Neela Bhaskar went on to become India’s first female full cave diver. While scuba diving is difficult enough, cave diving is a whole other playing field. In recreational diving, divers usually start resurfacing as soon as they cross a recommended time as they are a risk of decompression sickness. However, you can’t do that if you’re deep inside a cave. Apart from the inherent danger, there’s also the genuine possibility of getting lost inside a cave and just thinking about it could send chills down many of our spines. But Neela wasn’t afraid, and her fearlessness is what helped her bring this great honour as well as become a symbol for many young girls in our country.
Aanchal Thakur
While our talented athletes have bagged multiple medals in the Summer Olympics, India in the Winter Olympics is practically unheard of.
